The FA.B.: A Sustainable Fabric Bookcase

A Unique and Renewable Storage Solution

The FA.B. is a fabric bookcase designed by Aliki Rovithi that offers a fabulous new way to store, arrange, and protect your books and magazines. With its modular design and sustainable materials, it provides a unique and renewable storage solution for modern living spaces.

The inspiration for the FA.B. came from people's rapidly increasing book storage needs. As more and more books are being accumulated, traditional shelving systems often fall short in providing sufficient storage space. The FA.B. addresses this issue by offering a flexible and expandable storage solution.

What sets the FA.B. apart from other bookcases is its use of fabric units that can be added to a wooden stand. This modular design allows users to easily increase their storage capacity without the need for additional shelves or a new bookcase. The durable fabric, along with the wide open wooden sides, not only provides a stylish aesthetic but also minimizes the use of raw materials, aligning with the dematerialization approach of our times.

The FA.B. is made of birch plywood, which is laser cut for precision. Birch wood, when sourced from sustainably managed forests, poses low environmental risks. The fabric units are made of a recyclable, resilient, stain-resistant, and wrinkle-free fabric. The castors are made of steel and rubber, both of which are recyclable materials. Additionally, the FA.B. is designed as a flat-pack furniture, reducing its volume and carbon dioxide emissions during transportation.

This sustainable fabric bookcase is not only functional but also versatile. It can be used as a bookcase and a room divider, making it suitable for both home and office environments. The castors allow for easy mobility, even when fully loaded, unlike traditional bookcases. The FA.B. is also foldable and easy to assemble, making it a convenient choice for those who frequently move or have limited space.

The FA.B. project started in September 2011 in Athens and was completed in December 2011. It was exhibited at the DESIGN 2011 design exhibition at the Municipal Gallery of Athens, where it received great enthusiasm from visitors for its sustainable design.

This innovative design has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2012. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The FA.B. stands out for its technical characteristics, excellence, and ability to evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

The FA.B. is not just a bookcase; it is a statement of sustainable design and a solution to the ever-growing need for book storage. With its unique features and environmentally friendly materials, it offers a stylish and practical solution for organizing and protecting your beloved books and magazines.
